The boys soccer season has begun, with practices starting March 13 and games starting March 30 with a 6-0 win to PCM.
The team consists of 34 players, 15 of which will play varsity. Leaders of the team include those who played last season. “We have seven returning seniors and five returning juniors who will each play key roles in both our varsity & JV squads,” said coach Gerrit Brouwer.
One of the key strengths of the team is their experience. “Our team will have a number of strengths, and we will seek to utilize all of them,” said Brouwer, “We need to fill in a number of roles, but have experienced players who can do this well already at the beginning of the season.”
Another team strength is their chemistry, according to sophomore Kyle Fynaardt. “The entire team is always looking to make each other better. All of us are also great friends on and off the field,” said Fynaardt.
Challenges for the team include a busy schedule and replacing those who graduated. “I think the most challenging part of our season will be our schedule because it includes a lot of away games and several three game weeks,” said Fynaardt.
The team is looking forward to seeing how the season plays out. “Our goal as a team is to make it to state,” said junior Jose Mora.
Brouwer is confident about the skills of his team. “We had a great season last year and a lot of fun. I’m hopeful for this year and again expect to have fun and do well,” he said.
