Volleyball team maintains focus heading into postseason

by Olivia VanKooten

The PC volleyball team stands firm in their record of 18-17, 4-3 in conference, with 11 losses to 4A and 5A top ten teams as they prepare for postseason play. The team has been intentional in reps and practices so that they can play best volleyball. “We have been working on maintaining focus throughout the match, playing every point like it’s the last,” senior co-captain MaryKate Bandstra said.

Head coach John Evenhouse has seen progress. “We have really improved over the last 2 weeks in the area of ball-handling, spiking and serving. This will allow us to play with the top 2A teams,” he said.

The team has had many highlights this season, such as playing against the top ranked teams in the state like DCG.  They feel this has prepared them to play Sidney, the top ranked team in their tournament bracket. “We have played a lot of excellent teams already, but our biggest obstacle to making to state will be Sidney High School. We will be preparing for them over the next couple weeks,” said Evenhouse.

The team has also faced some challenges this season, especially the injury of senior Morgan Fompa. “Mo tore her ACL in the first tourney of the season,” Huisman said. “She was a key player of our team and that definitely hurt, but we have to overcome that.”

The team began tournament play against  Cardinal/Pekin at home on Monday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. Tournaments continue October 25 –30 at Creston.
