The five seniors and five sophomores on the varsity squad have kicked off the season with a 9-12 record. Head coach Joanna Settles and assistant Coach Kim Gritters are a main component to the team’s early success. Settles is said to be “Super encouraging when it comes to celebrating every point,” according to senior captain Molly Bolt.
While bringing in a different leader has brought a lot of changes, including new offenses, a new defense, and new underclassmen into the mix, everyone is said to be “adjusting well,” according to Bolt. “It is good for the team to have a fresh set of eyes on our team and a new perspective to bring us to compete at a higher level,” Bolt said. Other returning seniors include Lizzy Posthuma, Emma Dunsbergen, and Anna Van Zee who decided on the season theme “Fearless.”
This year’s team is very efficient and doesn’t waste time in practice as they are pushed to their limits by Settles. “We have several goals, including becoming conference champs, keeping our stats up, and becoming one family to peak at the end of the season and thriving in the post-season,” Bolt said.
Settles has plenty of experience coaching with three years of varsity basketball and one year of varsity volleyball in Arizona. This is her first time coaching volleyball in Iowa. “We love the cultural history, community pride, and excellence in education that Pella provides. We were looking for a smaller school for our three daughters that has high academics and Christian values,” she said.
Not only is Settles pushing the girls on the court, but off the court also. The team has been spending lots of time bonding whether it is painting flower pots, getting food, swimming or having sleepovers.
With the combination of their training physically, emotionally, and mentally, the team is ready to achieve great things. Settles summed it up with, “It’s great to be an Eagle!”
