Covid-19 can not stop the 2020 volleyball girls of Pella Christain! With their theme “Rise Above,” the players are finding ways to rise above differences, challenges, and especially the net. This was shown at their energizing home opener game, when they were head to head in all five sets against Norwalk.

With only two returning seniors, the varsity team is composed of a mix of thirteen members with different grade levels. JV has thirteen players, and the Freshmen team has twenty-two players, one of the largest groups in years.

Their toughest challenge this year will be the competition in the conference. Joana Settles, the head coach of varsity, says she wants, “Each player to develop their skills,” and “add tools to their tool box.”  This will help push them for the team’s success, and achieve their own set of goals.

Although there will be less physical encouragement, like high fives ect, the girls use other ways to celebrate and cheer each other on.

Elizabeth Brouwer, senior, says, “A lot of sports seasons are in jeopardy so I will be happy as long as we get to finish our season.” Brouwer also comments on the uplifting players and coaches by saying, “My favorite part about volleyball is definitely the team. I love the girls so much and could literally spend hours with them and it would never get old. We’ve played together for a while and I’ve gotten some of the best friendships out of it.”

This year may look slightly different ones in the past, but the players are staying strong both physically and mentally on the court.
