PC senior Grant Alsum began a paid internship in the information technology department at Vermeer Corporation this summer.
Grant Alsum went through a two-week summer training opportunity with Central College Professor Steven Fyfe before his six-week summer paid internship with Vermeer Corporation.
Alsum designed applications and created business intelligence reports. Alsum received college credit for both opportunities. He received IT credits and internship credits.
“I was a little nervous going into it, but I’ve definitely learned a lot,” Alsum says. “I’m a lot more comfortable with it now, and I earned some college credit.”
There are significant employment needs and opportunities like Alsum’s in Pella and Surrounding Communities. Vermeer’s internship program currently has “Earn and Learn” opportunities in IT, Early Childhood Education, Certified Nursing Assistant, Culinary Arts, Welding and Engineering Assistant roles.
Teri Vos, the director of the program shared, “All of these allow students to get college credit for their on-the-job training. Apprenticeships even allow students to get a college degree with little to no more money than what they earn from their internships.”
These internship opportunities are open to more students at Pella Christian. If students are interested, they should contact Brad Engbers who will work with Vos to explore opportunities.
Vos said, “Perhaps most importantly, it’s a “no risk” way for students to explore their career interests through on-the-job experiences, and likely get a full-time time job offer at the program’s conclusion!”
