All-state qualifiers this year at PC include Carson Breon and Nia Hoekstra, as well as Tessa Brouwer as an alternate. Qualifiers would ordinarily audition in Indianola, Iowa and then travel to Iowa State University for a festival and concert. This year auditions were held online and the concert was cancelled.
Qualifiers are elated to make it this year even if the auditions were online.
“It feels a little bit bittersweet this year… Making it is an incredible feeling, but the fact that I won’t get to go perform with hundreds of other dedicated musicians is disappointing,” said junior Nia Hoekstra.
Senior Carson Breon has qualified all four years of his high school career. He said, “It feels good to qualify, at this point I was just going to make it all 4 years.”
Tessa Brouwer, also a senior, qualified as an alternate this year. “Even though I didn’t fully qualify, I still feel honored and am excited to have qualified as an alternate. I had to practice quite a lot,” she said.
Students began practicing several months ago, and some rehearsed up to five times per week. “They both worked very hard and put in so many hours of practice,” said band teacher Ms. Bennett.
Although auditions were online and the performance was cancelled, qualifiers were still proud of their accomplishments and hope to continue using their musical talents.
