Four student writers from Pella Christian have won first place awards in the Three Rivers Writing Contest: junior Katie Larson with “Silhouettes and Shadows,” senior Scott Haveman with “A Tree in A Meadow” and “The State Championship,” junior Raeann Fopma with “Seasons Change,” and sophomore Zara Pippel with “Where I’m From.”
The deadline for submission was February 14. After this the student writing was sent to a panel of judges that were part of the Iowa Reading Association. Those who won first place received a certificate and a small gift. Students submitted writing for various reasons but a common pattern emerged. “Mrs. Haveman contacted me about sending something into the competition, and I figured why not? I love to write and I thought it would be fun if I could actually win an award while doing it,” said Fopma.
